At first glance, and maybe even at the end of everything, Chris Redfield is first and foremost a shoe-in for your typical ideal "military" man: honourable, upright and standing, devoted, and lives his life to serve and protect the people he cares about and the beliefs he puts his faith in. However, Chris Redfield lives his life by a code of conduct defined by what he believes is right and only what he believes is right Therefore, while he is out for the greater good, he is willing to break any rule necessary (whether it's defying a superior's orders or infiltrating a base in a country without prior authorization from the government) to achieve his goal. Basically, while Chris' heart is in the right place, he tends to lack the patience, control, and tact to achieve such things without sometimes getting himself into a bigger mess than necessary.

But, let's talk about this devotion a little bit. Chris is ultimately a good person, and he's not out for himself. He's out for the better good, or for the better good of the people he cares about. As a Military man, Chris was out to serve his country and there's little discrepancies over his loyalty to that cause. After the military, his protectiveness of his comrades in the field is very obvious, most notably to us during the Mansion Incident crisis. Chris' devotion and protectiveness also shows towards his younger sister, Claire. Don't mess with his little sister, okay.

And with all good things come negative things when not taken in moderation. While Chris is very devoted and means well, this "devotion" part of his personality brings a rather negative trait of his to light: his obsessive nature. Once Chris has his mind wrapped around something, he can't let it go and is the type of person that can let his obsession destroy everything around him (eg: his obsession with taking down Umbrella made him unbearable to be around after the mansion incident, he dropped everything and left for Europe in order to pursue this need to take Umbrella down, even when he is reunited with his sister Claire in CV, whom he is extremely protective of, his life is still narrowly and singlehandedly driven by his need to take down Umbrella for their crimes). And his obsession also leads him to hold grudges (hi, Wesker) and he just really really can't let go of things until they're settled. And when I mean settled, I mean they're settled the way Chris Redfield wants them settled—the way Chris Redfield feels they should be settled, because it's right.

With his obsession comes another one of his defining, but not so nice, traits: his temper. Similar to his inability to control his "obsessive" nature when it kicks in, Chris is rather fail at controlling his temper and is known to have a short fuse (apparently, punching people in the face for accidentally spilling coffee on you is totally legal in Chris' temper's world of rules). It's not a very endearing trait, and probably was a great help in getting him thrown out of the Air Force (along with his knack for being very good at disobeying when he doesn't agree with something).

Chris is also variously referenced in bios and in data records as being intelligent (among other things), and I suppose that would have to be true to a certain extent as he's gotten through some pretty incredible situations and he couldn't just do that on field experience/talent/skill alone. Chris isn't totally stupid, but his other negative personality traits can make him reckless. And if he's not being reckless, he can also have a talent for letting his narrow-mindedness sometimes block out certain things that he should be paying more attention to or even letting his temper get the best of him by getting angry when he's in a position of disadvantage, rather than putting his "intelligence" to use.
